Understory was founded on a conviction that has not changed: that the objects which inhabit our daily lives ought to be the work of free craftspeople, made with skill and intention, from materials that deserve to be used. That a towel should come from a workshop, not a warehouse. That a lamp should be designed by someone who understands what light does to a room. That the leather of your belt should have been worked by hands that respected the material’s provenance.
This is not nostalgia. It is not aesthetics for its own sake. It is a position — one the Gothic Revivalists held long before us — that the honest making of things is a moral act, and that the honest selling of them is a continuation of that act.
